Timour, plus connu sous le nom de Tamerlan (du persan تيمور لنگ, Timur(-i) Lang, qui signifie littéralement « Timour le Boiteux »), né dans les années 1320, ou le 8 avril 1336 à Kech, près de Chakhrisabz (actuel Ouzbékistan), et mort le 18 février 1405 à Otrar (actuel Kazakhstan), est un dirigeant et conquérant turco-mongol, fondateur de la dynastie des Timourides. Issu de la dynastie mongolo-turcique des Barlas, lointainement apparentée aux Bordjiguines de Gengis Khan, Tamerlan prend le contrôle du khanat de Djaghataï vers 1370. Il mène des campagnes militaires à travers le Moyen-Orient et l'Asie centrale, battant la Horde d'or, le sultanat mamelouk d'Égypte, l'Empire ottoman émergent, ainsi que le sultanat de Delhi en Inde, et tente même de restaurer la dynastie Yuan en Chine.
