Jackson Pollock, né le 28 janvier 1912 à Cody dans le Wyoming et mort le 11 août 1956 à Springs dans l'État de New York, est un peintre américain de l'expressionnisme abstrait, mondialement connu de son vivant. Il réalise plus de 700 œuvres, peintures achevées, essais peints ou sculptés et dessins ainsi que quelques gravures et a une influence déterminante sur le cours de l'art contemporain. La pratique du all-over ainsi que le « dripping », qu'il a beaucoup employé de 1947 à 1950, l'a rendu célèbre grâce aux photos et aux films de Hans Namuth, réalisés plus ou moins dans le feu de l'action. Sa reconnaissance, tardive après toute une vie dans le dénuement, a coïncidé avec l'émergence de New York comme nouvelle capitale mondiale de la culture, peu après la Seconde Guerre mondiale entre 1948 et 1950.
