Adam Smith, talvolta italianizzato in Adamo Smith (Kirkcaldy, 5 giugno 1723 – Edimburgo, 17 luglio 1790), è stato un filosofo ed economista scozzese pioniere nel campo dell'economia politica e figura chiave dell'Illuminismo scozzese. Considerato da molti il "padre dell'economia" o il "padre del capitalismo" , è principalmente noto per due opere classiche: "Teoria dei sentimenti morali" (1759) e "La ricchezza delle nazioni" (1776). Quest'ultimo saggio è considerato il suo capolavoro, segnando l'inizio della moderna economia come sistema completo e disciplina accademica. Smith si rifiuta di spiegare la distribuzione della ricchezza e del potere in termini di volontà divina e fa invece appello a fattori naturali, politici, sociali, economici, legali, ambientali e tecnologici, nonché alle interazioni tra di essi.
