Caligula, de son nom complet Caius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, né le 31 août 12 à Antium et mort assassiné le 24 janvier 41 à Rome, est le troisième empereur romain. Il règne de 37 à 41, succédant à son grand-oncle Tibère. Bien qu'il ait été nommé en référence à Jules César, les soldats de son père le surnomment Caligula (« petite caliga, sandalette ») à partir de sa campagne en Germanie. Selon les sources concernant son principat — essentiellement les récits de Suétone et Dion Cassius —, il connaît tout d'abord un début de règne prometteur, durant lequel il jouit d'une grande popularité auprès du peuple romain.
