Cayo Julio César Augusto Germánico​ (en latín: Gaius Iulius Caesar Augustus Germanicus; Anzio, 31 de agosto de 12-Roma, 24 de enero de 41), más conocido como Calígula, fue el tercer emperador romano, perteneciente a la dinastía Julio-Claudia, gobernando desde el año 37 hasta el año 41. Era hijo de Germánico, uno de los grandes generales de la historia de Roma, quien a su vez era hijo adoptivo del emperador Tiberio. Su abuelo Nerón Claudio Druso, muerto prematuramente, era el hermano menor del emperador Tiberio. De niño acompañó a su padre en sus expediciones militares por Germania (14-16), donde calzaba las caligas de los legionarios, quienes le dieron el sobrenombre afectuoso de «Calígula», que significa literalmente «botitas».
