Yves Montand was a French actor, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Paris and raised in Marseille. He was the son of a doctor and a pianist. He studied at the Conservatoire de Marseille and became a concert pianist before moving to Paris in 1944 to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique. He began his career as a singer in the cabarets of Paris and then starred in a number of French films, including "The Grand Illusion" (1937), "La Bête Humaine" (1938), "Diary of a Chambermaid" (1946), "The River" (1951), "Lola Montès" (1955), "The Red and the Black" (1954), "The Proud and the Beautiful" (1956), "Les Parisiennes" (1957), "The Adventures of Antoine Doinel" (1960), "The Viscount of Bragelonne" (1961), "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" (1964), "The Young Girls of Rochefort" (1967), and "Love on the Run" (1979).
