Aleksandr Mikhailovich Lyapunov (Алекса́ндр Миха́йлович Ляпуно́в, 6 June [O.S. 25 May] 1857 – 3 November 1918) was a Russian mathematician, mechanician and physicist. He was the son of the astronomer Mikhail Lyapunov and the brother of the pianist and composer Sergei Lyapunov. Lyapunov is known for his development of the stability theory of a dynamical system, as well as for his many contributions to mathematical physics and probability theory. Read more on Wikipedia

His biography is available in different languages on Wikipedia. Aleksandr Lyapunov is the 159th most popular mathematician (up from 170th in 2019), the 302nd most popular biography from Russia (up from 376th in 2019) and the 11th most popular Russian Mathematician.

Aleksandr Lyapunov is most famous for his work on stability theory. Lyapunov's theorem states that if a dynamical system is stable, then it has at least one positive Lyapunov exponent.
