Paus Pius IX, geboren als Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti (Senigallia, 13 mei 1792 – Rome, 7 februari 1878), was hoofd van de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk en van de Kerkelijke Staten van 1846 tot 1878, en geldt daarmee na Petrus (35 jaar) als langstzittende bekleder van het ambt van paus. Onder Pius IX kwam een einde aan de wereldlijke macht van de paus over de grondgebieden in het bezit van de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk, waar het hoofd van de kerk het souverein gezag had, inclusief de stad Rome.
