Rachel Louise Carson, née à Springdale, en Pennsylvanie, le 27 mai 1907 et morte le 14 avril 1964 à Silver Spring dans le Maryland, est une biologiste marine et militante écologiste américaine. Carson commence sa carrière comme biologiste au US Bureau of Fisheries (Bureau des pêches) puis se consacre progressivement à l'écriture à plein temps dans les années 1950. Son best-seller Cette mer qui nous entoure (The Sea Around Us), publié en 1951, lui vaut d'être reconnue comme écrivaine de talent, et lui apporte une sécurité financière.
