Marcien, de son nom d'empereur (en latin) Flavius Marcianus Augustus, né vers 395 en Thrace ou en Illyrie et mort le 27 janvier 457, est à la tête de l'Empire romain d'Orient de 450 à 457, succédant à Théodose II après avoir épousé Pulchérie, sœur de l'empereur défunt et régente. Ses origines sont assez mal connues. Son père est militaire et, très jeune, perpétuant la tradition familiale, Marcien s'engage dans l'armée.
