Joseph Banks, né le 13 février 1743 à Londres et mort le 19 juin 1820 à Londres, est un naturaliste britannique, passionné de botanique, qui participa au premier voyage de James Cook autour du monde (1768-1771). Cet aristocrate foncier, imprégné des idées de progrès, devint le grand patron des sciences britanniques de la fin du XVIIIe siècle. À la tête de la Royal Society pendant plus de 41 ans, il réussit à infléchir l'étude des sciences naturelles vers les applications pratiques au service du développement économique de l'empire britannique.
