Thomas Wolsey ( WUUL-zee; c. March 1473 – 29 November 1530) was an English statesman and Catholic cardinal. When Henry VIII became King of England in 1509, Wolsey became the king's almoner. Thomas Wolsey was a cardinal and the Lord Chancellor of England during the reign of King Henry VIII. He was a close advisor to the king, but he was also a powerful and wealthy man in his own right.
