Philippe II, Duke of Orléans (Philippe Charles; 2 August 1674 – 2 December 1723), who was known as the Regent, was a French prince, soldier, and statesman who served as Regent of the Kingdom of France from 1715 to 1723. He is referred to in French as le Régent. He was the son of Philippe I, Duke of Orleans, and Elisabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Orléans. Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, was a member of the House of Valois and the son of King Louis XII of France and Anne of Brittany. He was the first of the House of Valois to become King of France, succeeding his cousin Charles VIII in 1498. He was also the first French monarch to use the title "King of France" as opposed to "King of France and Navarre".
