"Mendele the book peddler"; January 2, 1836, Kapyl – December 8, 1917 [N.S.], Odessa), born Sholem Yankev Abramovich (Yiddish: שלום יעקבֿ אַבראַמאָװיטש‎, Russian: Соломон Моисеевич Абрамович, romanized: Solomon Moiseyevich Abramovich) or S.
