Julius Wagner-Jauregg (German: [ˈjuːli̯ʊs ˈvaːɡnɐ ˈjaʊʁɛk]; 7 March 1857 – 27 September 1940) was an Austrian physician, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1927, and is the first psychiatrist to have done so. In 1927, Wagner-Jauregg won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in treating syphilis. He found that injecting the patient with malaria parasites could kill the syphilis bacteria, and this was a major breakthrough in the treatment of syphilis.
