Edwin Jacob "Jake" Garn (born October 12, 1932) is an American politician from the U.S. state of Utah. A member of the Republican Party, he served as a member of the United States Senate from 1974 to 1993. Garn became the first sitting member of the United States Congress of either chamber to fly in space when he flew aboard the now-former Space Shuttle Discovery as a payload specialist during NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) mission STS-51-D (April 12–19, 1985). Prior to his time in Congress, he served as the mayor of Salt Lake City from 1972 to 1974. Read more on Wikipedia
