Hideo Sakai is most famous for being the first Japanese American to be awarded the Medal of Honor. In 1944, he was serving as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was captured by the Japanese and held as a prisoner of war. He was tortured and starved. He was finally rescued and returned to the U.S. in 1945.
