Georges Picquart was a French army officer who became famous for his role in the Dreyfus Affair. He was an artillery officer who was assigned to the Statistical Section of the General Staff, an intelligence office that collected and analyzed information about France's enemies. In 1894, Major Henry discovered a letter from an agent of the German military intelligence service, saying that the Germans had a spy in the French army. The spy was soon identified as Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish artillery officer. Picquart was appointed to head the investigation of Dreyfus, and he found evidence that Dreyfus was innocent and that the real spy was someone else.
