In the year 1762, the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire were in a war. The Russian Empire was winning, but the Ottoman Empire had taken over most of the Black Sea. The Russian Empire wanted to regain control of the Black Sea, so they invaded the Crimea. This was the start of the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774. The Russians conquered the Crimea and the Ottomans were forced to sign a peace treaty. This peace treaty was called the Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainardji.
