Stephen Joshua Sondheim (New York, 22 marzo 1930 – Roxbury, 26 novembre 2021) è stato un compositore, paroliere e drammaturgo statunitense. È considerato uno dei più importanti autori nel panorama del teatro musicale del XX secolo ed il suo ruolo nello sviluppo del genere del musical moderno viene ritenuto fondamentale. Autore di alcuni tra i più significativi musical americani della seconda metà del Novecento, quali A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd ed Into the Woods, ha lavorato anche come paroliere dei classici Gypsy: A Musical Fable e West Side Story. Sondheim ha scritto anche delle colonne sonore originali per i film Stavisky il grande truffatore (1974), Reds (1980) e Dick Tracy (1990), per cui scrisse la canzone "Sooner or Later" che gli valse l'Oscar alla migliore canzone nel 1991.
