Wilhelm Richard Wagner (in italiano pronunciato /ˈvaɡner/; in tedesco [ˈvɪlhɛlm ˈʀɪçaʀt ˈvaːɡnɐ]; Lipsia, 22 maggio 1813 – Venezia, 13 febbraio 1883) è stato un compositore, poeta, regista teatrale, direttore d'orchestra e saggista tedesco. Riconosciuto come uno fra i massimi esponenti del romanticismo, Wagner è soprattutto noto per la riforma del teatro musicale. Diversamente dalla maggioranza degli altri compositori di opera lirica, Wagner, autodidatta, scrisse sempre da sé il libretto e la sceneggiatura per i suoi lavori.
