Era figlio di Meskiaggasher re-sacerdote del villaggio di Eanna che verrà inglobato in Uruk. Enmerkar is most famous for his victory over the sea god, Enki. The story goes that Enki is so angry with Enmerkar for building a great temple to the god of wind, Enlil, that he sends a flood to destroy the temple. Enmerkar, however, has a plan. He makes a boat and fills it with animals and plants to preserve them from the flood. When the boat is finished, he sends a dove to see if the water level has gone down. The dove returns with an olive branch in its beak, showing that the flood has receded.
