El Greco, oppure il Greco, pseudonimo di Domínikos Theotokópoulos (AFI: [ðoˈminikos θeotoˈkopulos]; in greco Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος?; Candia, 1º ottobre 1541 – Toledo, 7 aprile 1614), è stato un pittore, scultore e architetto greco, vissuto in Italia e in Spagna. È tra le figure più importanti del tardo Rinascimento spagnolo ed è spesso considerato il primo maestro del Siglo de Oro. Nacque a Creta, allora parte della Repubblica di Venezia e centro, all'epoca, di un importante movimento pittorico post-bizantino chiamato Scuola cretese. Dopo l'apprendistato come pittore di icone, diventò maestro d'arte seguendo il corso di quella tradizione artistica, prima di intraprendere, all'età di 26 anni, il viaggio verso Venezia, usuale meta dei pittori greci dell'epoca.
