Egli risolse una crisi dinastica sconfiggendo l'usurpatore Ariperto II, il quale, appoggiato dai Franchi, cercò di impadronirsi del trono di Lombardia ponendo fine alla linea principale della dinastia bavarese che aveva regnato fino a quel momento.
