Selim I

Sélim Ier (en turc ottoman : ياووز سلطان سليم خان, en turc : Yavuz Sultan Selim Han), dit « le Brave » ou « le Terrible » (en turc : yavuz, « brave », « hardi », « audacieux »), né le 10 octobre 1470 à Amasya et mort le 22 septembre 1520 à Constantinople, est le neuvième sultan de l'Empire ottoman. Après avoir renversé son père, Bayézid II, il s'impose comme sultan, puis comme calife en s'emparant des insignes du pouvoir califal détenus au Caire – même si les sultans ottomans n'ont pas attendu Sélim Ier pour s'attribuer de temps à autre le titre de calife. Il combat la Perse chiite puis détruit le sultanat égyptien des Mamelouks avant de conquérir la Mecque et Médine et d'obtenir l'allégeance de Barberousse à Alger.
