Joseph Kessel, parfois dit « Jef », né le 10 février 1898 à Villa Clara (Entre Ríos, Argentine) et mort le 23 juillet 1979 à Avernes (Val-d'Oise), est un romancier, grand reporter, aventurier, résistant et académicien français. Engagé volontaire en France comme aviateur pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il tire de cette expérience humaine son premier grand succès littéraire, L'Équipage, publié à 25 ans. Dès lors, son œuvre romanesque se nourrit de l'aventure humaine dans laquelle il s'immerge, à la recherche d'hommes exceptionnels.
