Jean Mermoz, né à Aubenton (Aisne), le 9 décembre 1901 et disparu dans l'océan Atlantique le 7 décembre 1936, est un aviateur français, figure légendaire de l'Aéropostale, surnommé l'Archange. Les 12 et 13 mai 1930, à bord d'un hydravion Latécoère 28.3, il effectue, en équipage, la première traversée de Atlantique-Sud pour l'aéropostale au terme d'un vol de 21 heures et 10 minutes. Jean Mermoz prouve ainsi que le courrier peut être transporté d'un continent à l'autre avec l'avion. Entre 1930 et 1936, Jean Mermoz aura effectué vingt-trois traversées de l'Atlantique-Sud.
