Duccio di Buoninsegna (Sienne, vers 1255-1260 - vers 1318-1319) est peintre siennois, important à l'échelle européenne. On considère généralement que son influence fut déterminante dans l'évolution du style gothique international qui s'exerça en particulier sur Simone Martini et les deux frères Ambrogio et Pietro Lorenzetti. L'art de Duccio a, à l'origine, une solide composante byzantine, liée notamment à la culture plus récente de la période des Paléologue, et est fortement influencé par Cimabue (qui est très certainement son professeur dans ses premières années d'activité), à laquelle il ajoute une note personnelle dans le sens du gothique, se traduisant par une linéarité et une élégance transalpines, une ligne douce et une gamme chromatique raffinée.
