James Kerr (born 9 July 1959) is a Scottish musician best known as lead singer and lyricist of the rock band Simple Minds. Since the group’s formation in Glasgow in 1977, Kerr has fronted the band through decades of recording and global touring. With Kerr as their lead singer, Simple Minds became the most commercially successful Scottish band of the 1980s, achieving five consecutive UK number-one albums and selling more than 60 million albums worldwide. Kerr grew up in the Toryglen area of the city and initially trained as a plumber before forming the punk group Johnny and the Self-Abusers with guitarist Charlie Burchill in 1977.
