Óscar Arias Sánchez (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈoskaɾ ˈaɾjas]; born 13 September 1940 in Heredia, Costa Rica) is a Costa Rican lawyer, economist, and political scientist. He served as President of the Republic of Costa Rica for two non-consecutive terms: 1986–1990 and 2006–2010. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for his peace plan aimed at ending the brutal civil wars that were devastating Central America. In August of that same year, his Peace Plan was endorsed by Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Read more on Wikipedia
